Summer Reading to Save Your Sanity: 4th-6th Grade

By fourth grade, your child should be starting to read on their own, which means it becomes all the more important for them to fall in love with what with they're reading!  This is also the age range that teachers start to help students develop their ability for in-depth analysis and other reading comprehension strategies.  As parents, the best thing is for your child to fall in love with reading on their own time-which means, excellent books:

  • Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland: This series helps students step into the genre of fantasy fiction with dragons, wars, and prophecies!
  • The Ruins of Gorlan: The Ranger's Apprentice, Book 1 by Debra Bogart: This series follows Will, a 15-year old apprentice who will be training to protect the kingdom.
  • The Book Scavenger by Tracy Moore: This exciting series follows 12-year old Emily who is following a series of hints and puzzles to find books that have been hidden in cities all over the United States. It's a book about the love of books!

Some other things you can do to help your child develop reading skills include asking them about their reading, reading with them, or helping them find books that they love if the recommendations above aren't their style!
