Summer Reading to Save Your Sanity: K-First Grade

Having your child read over the summer will not only save your sanity, but it is also a fantastic way to help them retain their reading skills from one year to the next. The Department of Education recommends that kids read at least 30 minutes a day! Not sure where to start? Here are some summer reading recommendations for your child to help stop the "summer slide":

  • Amelia Bedelia by Peggy Parish: Amelia Bedelia is an excellent book series for new readers that helps teach new readers about words with double meanings.
  • Pete the Cat by James Dean: Pete the Cat asks new readers questions about the colors of different foods and objects-allowing these budding readers to interact with the story.
  • Elephant and Piggie by Mo Willems: The Elephant and Piggie series follows the adventures of the careful elephant, Gerald, and his haphazard friend, Piggie. Kids love to see how they will escape each troublesome situation in which they find themselves!

Regardless of which book you choose, spending time reading with your child is a great way to prepare for the new year while enjoying your summer!
